How much does an American Eagle gold coin weigh?

The weight of the American gold Eagle, authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and now the world’s most popular bullion coin, depends on the denomination. These coins come in $5, $10, $25 or $50 denominations.

American Eagles are 22 karat gold (pure gold is 24 karat) so each coin weighs slightly more than the gold weight (31.1 grams of pure gold). The difference is made up of an added alloy of silver and copper for hardness.  A $50, one troy ounce American Eagle gold coin thus weighs 33.931 grams.

The $25 Eagle weighs in at 16.96 grams. The $10 coin weighs 8.48 grams, while the $5 coin weighs 3.39 grams, or one-tenth of a troy ounce. Despite size and weight differences, gold and alloy breakdowns are the same for each of the four coin denominations: 91.67% gold (22 karat), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper.
